The ASLEF union has called two days of strikes in November
There haven’t been any strikes on the capital’s rail network since the spring but that looks set to change next month as both ASLEF, the tube drivers’ union, and the RMT (the Rail, Maritime and Transport union) have ordered walkouts in November.
Both unions are protesting over pay. ASLEF workers are walking out over a pay agreement for 2024, with Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s full-time organiser on London Underground, saying, “We don’t want to go on strike – we don’t want to make travelling in and around the capital more difficult for passengers and we don’t want to lose a day’s pay – but we have been forced into this position because LU management won’t sit down properly and negotiate with us.”
RMT members are striking over a “wholly inadequate” pay offer, with RMT general secretary Mick Lynch saying “London Underground’s pay offer falls short of what our members deserve. It threatens to remove collective bargaining for a growing portion of staff, pushing them into pay bands that are decided solely by management. This undermines our members’ rights and the core principles of fair negotiation. No trade union can accept any pay proposal where management decide which of our members gets a pay rise and those who do not.”
When are the next Tube strikes in London?
ASLEF members, including drivers, instructors, management grades, and members in the engineering section, will be striking for 24 hours on the following dates:
- Thurs 7th November 2024
- Tues 12th November 2024
That means almost all of the London Underground network will be affected and there would be little to no service on those two days. ASLEF members will also take part in an overtime ban from Sun 3rd – Sat 16th November.
RMT members will be striking from Fri 1st – Fri 8th November 2024, with different groups of staff taking action on different days, which are as follows:
- Fri 1st – Sat 2nd November 2024 – engineering vehicles operations and maintenance staff will strike from 6pm on 1st Nov to 5.59pm on 2nd Nov
- Sun 3rd – Mon 4th November 2024 – track access controllers, control centre, and power/control staff will strike from 6.59pm on 3rd Nov to 6.59pm on 4th Nov
- Mon 4th November 2024 – Emergency Response Unit (ERU) staff will strike from 12.01am to 11.59pm
- Tues 5th November 2024 – fleet, engineering, stations and trains staff (except ERU and engineering vehicles operations and maintenance) will strike from 12.01am to 11.59pm
- Weds 6th – Fri 8th November 2024 – signallers and service controllers will strike from 112.01am to 11.59pm on 6th Nov, with further strikes on 7th and 8th Nov
It’s unclear yet what impact the RMT strikes will have on the Tube network but it’s likely that stations could be shut at short notice and services would be heavily disrupted.
The unions have been in talks with TfL and further meetings are scheduled to take place so there’s still time for agreements to be reached and the strikes to be called off.
